As an institution, with a mission of offering educational services, SMUC has been actively engaged in supporting the community in its vicinity and beyond.  Accordingly, civil servants and the wider community have made use of such endeavors.  For instance, the Department of Computer Science has trained a considerable number of employees from Lideta Kifle Ketema Administration, the Addis Ababa City Administration Mass Media, and teachers from partner schools. Similarly, the Business Faculty offered training to Addis Ababa sub-city administrators, people engaged in micro business, on different management and accounting skills at different times. Women journalists from ETV underwent training in English Language speaking and writing skills.

In addition to the material and financial support they get, the local partner schools have benefited a great deal from the training packages offered by SMUC.  In this respect, the teachers got the opportunity to have skills upgrading training on ‘Report Writing,’ ‘Teaching Methods’ and on Preparing Teaching Aids on various occasions. 

At national level, the institution has contributed its share in response to either national disasters, as in the floods in Dire Dawa and the South Omo, or the telethon events that took place on various occasions.  Financial assistance has also been given to community endeavors that focus on either renovating schools or constructing a new one.  These include schools in the regions. Similarly, prisoners under Federal and Regional Administration Jurisdictions have been beneficiaries of institutional scholarship scheme in the distance mode of learning. SMUC has also sponsored a TV-Talk-Show that addressed social issues of national significance for almost two years.  The programme attracted viewers across the country, and the issues appealed to the taste of both the youth and adult age groups.
