Faculty of Teacher Education

The Faculty of Teacher Education comprises four departments: Department of Languages, Department of Mathematics, Department of Social Sciences and Department of Education.

The office of the Faculty and all the departments under it are located at Lideta Campus.

The Faculty, through its departments, offers certificate, diploma and degree programs. The overall aim of the teacher education program is geared towards producing competent school teachers who have the desired academic knowledge, sufficient professional skills and positive attitudes.

All the courses of the different programs of the Faculty are designed according to the Ministry of Education directives stipulated in the National Curriculum Guideline for Pre-service Teacher Education Program of March 2003, on the basis of the Teacher Education System Overhaul (TESO) framework.

The 10+1 certificate program is a one-year program for regular students and a year and a half for extension students. This certificate program trains teachers for the First Cycle Primary Education (Grades 1-4). The prime objective is to prepare teachers who will be academically and professionally qualified to teach effectively all subjects offered in Grades 1-4.

The diploma (10+3) program is a three-year teacher training program for the Second Cycle (Grades 5-8) of Primary Education. The objective is to prepare teachers, who will be academically and professionally qualified to teach subjects in Grades 5-8. The program targets regular, extension and summer in-service students.

The degree program, initiated in 2006, targeting summer in-service students, is designed to produce teachers who will offer courses in secondary schools.

The Faculty publishes The Teacher – a bi-annual bulletin. The Teacher is a bilingual bulletin (English and Amharic) covering a wide range of issues related to education including research findings, interviews, and literary works. It serves as a forum among professionals in the area from within and outside the University College.
